The Great Russian silents are usually full of propaganda, with stylised characters representing archetypes rather than individuals. Such films, while undoubtedly brilliant, can at times appear to be an exhibition of a director's particular theory of filmmaking. While Bed and Sofa uses typically fast "Russian editing", it is used unobtrusively and doesn't overwhelm the narrative. The characters in this film are believable individuals rather than revolutionary heroes or villains. The story is more about subtly exploring the way men and women treat each other, than about expressing propaganda points. The film begins with Kolia and his wife Liuda living in a one room apartment. This review is from: Bed And Sofa/Chess Fever (DVD) I found this 2-disc DVD set even better than I anticipated, and I was impressed not only by the films themselves but by the musical score and optional commentary to "Bed and Sofa". The second disc even has the original versions of both films with Russian intertitles, but besides Russian letters and recognizable scenes of Moscow, there is nothing else in these films that smacks of Soviet propaganda. In fact, "Bed and Sofa" is a very human story everyone can relate to, thanks to the excellent direction by Abram Room who captures the moods and feelings of three people living in a small basement flat. The attention to details of domestic matters and the characters' emotions and reactions very effectively draws the viewer into their world so that a certain suspense of the outcome develops. It tells the story of a ménage à trois (a very daring plot for Soviet cinema in the 1920s) between one woman (Liuda) and two men (Volodia and Kolia). Brief Plot Summary (spoilers) Volodia and Kolia were friends during the Revolution and meet up accidentally when Volodia attempts to find living space in Moscow, where Kolia and Liuda live a married life with a tabby cat. Kolia treats his wife as a child (perhaps without realizing how degrading he is being) and she lives entirely within the domestic space and seldom ventures outside. Volodia begins an affair with Liuda. He participates in the housework, brings her magazines, and takes her on plane rides. Both items are being placed into long term storage, so I wanted a product that would help protect them. There is 1 cover per package, cover fit my 8 foot couch perfectly. The plastic is on the thin side. I would not use for heavy duty protection- against dogs or cats. I had hoped to be able to put this over my couch and then put Lightweight Cotton Sofa lipcover - Claret over it. This wouldn't work for that purpose, because it's not really fitted and too thin and slippery to use underneath a slipcover. This plastic is more like something you'd throw over your couch if you were painting the walls. I thought it would work temporarily, but it didn't. I ended up using the slipcover without the plastic underneath. Was hoping to cover the couch and then put a blanket over, but the plastic is too thin to stay in place. A small breeze from a fan causes it to move. Was hoping it would be sturdy like the plastic that some couches come wrapped in. Complete rip off. I ordered these because they were the cheapest set on Amazon and after moving to a new location I was strapped for cash. By looking at the boxes, I couldn't believe it actually contained a sofa and loveseat. When I opened the boxes, I sprayed down the insides of the sofa & loveseat with bedbug spray because I had these pests years ago and didn't know how they entered my last apartment before so I was being extra cautious this time. Trust me, a $3.00 bottle of bedbug spray will save you tons of money & the headache of trying to get rid of these vampires. Too many people had these bugs hitchhike in their homes via old & new furniture. Some of the cushions were neatly packed underneath the sofa and loveseat and just needed to be pulled out and placed in position. The screws were a bit of a challenge but wasn't too bad to maneuver. All I wanted was a cheap couch that was comfortable to sit on, look decent, and felt sturdy. This couch set delivered on all three fronts and I've had absolutely no problems with it whatsoever. The set was quick and easy to assemble, and everything looked as advertised. I will note that the cushions may be stiff for some, but this is more of a preference as I enjoy a firmer couch.
